Filmmakers Create Stunning Seven-Mile Scale Model of the Solar System in Nevada Desert

The solar system is truly massive. As UniverseToday points out, it would take 6,000 years to travel from the sun to Pluto at highway speeds. Because of the extremity involved in depicting such massive distances and relatively small sizes, the sun and its orbiting bodies are almost never shown with both size and distance to scale — until now.

Two enterprising filmmakers recently took to the Nevada desert to create the first scale model of the solar system, which spans seven miles and features a marble-sized Earth:

We’d only add one thing to this Herculean feat: our good friend Pluto!
